Discovering Where They Fought:
Battle Histories

The unit histories in the CWSS are linked to histories of the 364 most significant Civil War battles already on the Internet from the NPS' American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP). These battle histories were compiled as part of a report to Congress by the Civil War Sites Advisory Committee.

The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) and the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) have graciously partnered with the CWSS to expand on those battle summaries to include many other battles not included in the 364 total and also feature the latest preservation efforts where they apply.

The American Battlefield Protection Program
The ABPP promotes the preservation of significant historic battlefields associated with wars on American soil. The goals of the program are 1) to protect battlefields and sites associated with armed conflicts that influenced the course of our history, 2) to encourage and assist all Americans in planning for the preservation, management, and interpretation of these sites, and 3) to raise awareness of the importance of preserving battlefields and related sites for future generations. The ABPP focuses primarily on land use, cultural resource and site management planning, and public education.

The Civil War Preservation Trust
The CWPT is America's largest non-profit organization devoted to the preservation of our nation's endangered Civil War battlefield lands. The Trust also promotes educational programs and heritage tourism initiatives to inform the public about the war and the fundamental conflicts that sparked it.
